RCC Welcomes McMaster Neurofunctional Acupuncture Program

Published February 03, 2025

We are thrilled to share some exciting news that will elevate our commitment to excellence in education and practice!

Our North York campus will become a satellite location for the McMaster Neurofunctional Acupuncture Program, the first university-based acupuncture program in Canada, running uninterrupted since 1998. This collaboration allows students of the McMaster Neurofunctional Acupuncture Program to attend a portion of the in-person course at our conveniently located campus at 1446 Don Mills Rd., providing greater accessibility for those residing in the North York area.

This partnership comes after several months of initial collaboration with Dr. Alejandro Elorriaga Claraco, MD, a Sports Medicine Specialist from Spain. He is the founder and main lecturer of the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program at McMaster University and an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesia. With over 30 years of experience in sports medicine, pain treatment, and postgraduate education, Dr. Elorriaga brings a wealth of knowledge to our collaboration.

Throughout his career, Dr. Elorriaga has consulted for hundreds of professional athletes and thousands of private clients worldwide and served as a medical consultant for numerous world-class sports events, including two Olympic Games. He has also been a consultant for professional basketball teams in Spain and served as the Medical Director of a government-sponsored High-Performance Training Center, caring for over 100 elite athletes.

Dr. Elorriaga will join the advisory committee of the Royal Canadian College of Massage Therapy, adding invaluable insights to our program.

We also want to recognize Dr. Mike Prebeg, a senior instructor in the McMaster Neurofunctional Acupuncture Program, a close friend, and advisor to RCC. Dr. Prebeg is a highly esteemed consultant for elite athletes in Canada and the USA, with an impressive track record in handling complex sports injury cases and contributing to some of the most remarkable comebacks in sports. He has held prestigious consulting roles with the NHL Players' Association, multiple NHL teams, and the New York Yankees. Additionally, Dr. Prebeg has been featured in the Amazon Prime series Face-off: Inside the NHL.

Other faculty members of the McMaster Neurofunctional Acupuncture Program will also collaborate with our college on developing and delivering a curriculum tailored with the RCC to provide more opportunities for professional growth for existing Registered Massage Therapists and current students.

We are genuinely excited about the new possibilities for learning and professional development that this collaboration brings for our students and graduates. Stay tuned for more updates and information about upcoming courses!
